Edward Julius Detmold

Edward Julius Detmold (1883 – 1957) was born in London, the twin brother of Charles Maurice. They worked together making sketches at the Zoological Gardens and exhibited together from the age of fourteen. He became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrated, known for his subtle placement of animals within their natural environment and the decorative composition of his works.

Edward expressed artistic versatility and published a number of books of fine fantasy drawings in the 1920s; they portrayed a vivid imagination and he utilised warm colouring, which suited the period.

He retired from the world of illustration to live out his days in Montgomeryshire, Wales.

Books illustrated include: Pictures from Birdland (with CMD), Sixteen illustrations of subjects from Kipling’s ‘Jungle Book’, The Jungle Book, The Fables of Aesop, The Life of the Bee, Birds and Beasts, Hours of Gladness (released in the US as ‘News of Spring’), Animals of the Farm and Woodland, Rainbow Houses, Tales from the Thousand and One Nights.
